Somerset photo diary: staying at The Pig near Bath and Babington House

Where has the time gone? It’s been almost a month since Oliver and I took a long weekend break in Somerset, but I’m still reminiscing over the trip we took. As we’re getting married this year, we’re short on holiday days (saving the majority for our honeymoon!), and decided to book a dreamy English countryside retreat rather than go abroad as a summer escape. We booked two nights at The Pig near Bath, and Babington House as they’re both firm favourites of ours, having visited the The Pig's branch in Devon over Valentine’s, and Babington for my birthday earlier this year.

I won’t be sharing reviews of either hotel (you can read reviews of our previous stays here and here), but I have so many photos that I want to share of both beautiful properties. Our days pretty much consisted of exploring the grounds of each hotel, relaxing, and eating far too much…first up was The Pig near Bath, which we actually preferred much more to their sister hotel near Devon; it’s a stunning Georgian house set amongst bountiful grounds, and decorated with The Pig’s signature rustic-chic furnishings.

Our bedroom was a spacious ‘Comfy Big Luxe’ room in the main house, featuring a sitting area, freestanding bathtub in the bedroom, and four-poster king size bed, with views over the gardens. What a dream!

I loved the outdoor kitchen at The Pig, where you can order wood-fired homemade pizzas (toppings include courgette, ricotta and tomato) as well as everything on their a la carte menu. The weather was pretty perfect during our stay, allowing us to eat lunch outside.

After two nights at The Pig, we headed to Babington House for a further two nights, which is part of the Soho House group, and is probably my favourite ever country house hotel in the UK.

We stayed in an Attic Room on the first night, which was cosy and elegant, and one of the (much larger) Main House bedrooms on our second night, that featured a roomy four-poster bed, plush chaise lounge, and freestanding bathtub in front of the fireplace: super luxurious! I’m such a fan of the colour schemes in the bedrooms at Babington, which are quite feminine, featuring floral wallpapers and pastel-coloured velvet furnishings.

All of our meals at Babington were delicious, from the Sunday roast on our arrival, to the cooked breakfasts that we indulged in after workouts in the gym, and of course, the incredible afternoon tea spreads laid out every single day (complimentary to all guests, and featuring endless home-baked cakes, scones, cookies, and puddings).

We spent our days at the Cowshed spa, dipping in both the outdoor (and indoor pools), and also indulging in a relaxing couples’ massage. I’m already thinking about the next time we can come visit!

Somerset is one of my favourite counties in England. With major cities such as beautiful Bath and buzzing Bristol, as well as smaller towns with lots to offer (Bruton, Frome etc), you won’t get bored exploring the surrounding area, wherever you choose to stay. Book yourself a room at The Pig or Babington House for a luxurious weekend away, and make sure to hire a car to have a drive around the area; I’d recommend breakfast or lunch at At The Chapel in Bruton, coffee shop hopping in Bath, and an afternoon spent wandering around Frome.
