Hotel review: The Wheatsheaf Inn

Ahhh, the Cotswolds. One of my favourite places to escape in the UK, thanks to its picturesque postcard-esque rolling hills and sandstone villages. We’ve already managed to escape here quite a few times this year, as it’s where Oliver’s family are based, and last weekend we were back in the area for his brother’s 21st birthday.

Thanks to Sawday’s Travel, we were housed at The Wheatsheaf Inn, in the quaint town of Northleach near Cheltenham. We’ve stayed at one of The Lucky Onion’s gorgeous properties before, and have grown to love the boutique hotel group for its characterful properties that feature individually, tastefully designed bedrooms.

The hotel is more than just a pub with rooms, priding itself on being a modern coaching inn, featuring 14 plush bedrooms, each varying in size and design. We were housed in a Very Good Room, which was cosy in size but featured a sprawling king-size bed, him-and-her sinks in the bathroom, and a tiled walk-in shower stocked with Bramley and Acqua di Parma bath products; small details such as the velvet furnishings throughout the room, and the homemade brownie bites on the tea and coffee tray added an extra layer of luxury to our stay.

We arrived late on Friday evening, and after dinner with Oliver’s family in nearby Southrop, were ready to collapse in our bedroom. Breakfast the next morning was served in the downstairs communal restaurant, which spans several different rooms, and offers a continental breakfast spread as well as home-cooked options such as avocado on toast and eggs royale. In the summer, guests also lounge outside in The Wheatsheaf’s beer garden, which features a pizza oven and live music on various evenings.

We spent the rest of the day exploring various villages nearby (each as beautiful and photogenic as the next), before celebrating Oliver’s brother’s 21st in nearby Burford into the early hours of the morning.

The next morning, we tucked into a hearty recovery breakfast of eggs Florentine and fluffy pancakes (served with creme fraiche and berry compote - YUM!) before it was time to head home to London. A short but sweet stay, that allowed us a glimpse into the warm character of the hotel. The Wheatsheaf is definitely a place for Cotswolds locals to meet (whether that’s for drinks, brunch, Sunday roast, or dinners in the garden), and we felt lucky to have stayed in one of their gorgeous bedrooms too. If you’re ever in the area, I’d certainly recommend The Wheatsheaf (or any one of The Lucky Onion’s properties), as you can rest assured that you’ll be well looked after.
